The streets of modern Japan just got a little more crowded.

The official Yōkai! Character Builder is live, and you can use it free.

Pick a yōkai, answer a few questions, and let the Builder handle the rules work. It calculates the mechanical choices behind your character, helps you shape their identity, and exports an official PDF character sheet when you're done.

What Is Yōkai!?

Yōkai! is a tabletop roleplaying game inspired by Japanese folklore and set in modern Japan.

You play as a yōkai, one of the creatures, spirits, and supernatural beings that have lived in Japanese stories for centuries. Your character might be a river-dwelling Kappa, a shapeshifting Kitsune, a huge Oni, or something much stranger.

Now put those creatures in a world of commuter trains, convenience stores, crowded cities, smartphones, and people who have mostly stopped believing in them.

That's where the trouble starts.

Yōkai need Fear.

What your character does can turn them into a whispered rumor, a local legend, or the reason someone refuses to walk down a certain street after sunset. As that reputation grows, so does your place in the hidden world of Yōkai!.

The game uses a fast d12 system designed to keep play moving.

The Character Builder makes getting into that system much easier.

Meet the Yōkai! Character Builder

The Builder walks you through character creation one step at a time.

You start by choosing your yōkai. From there, you answer questions about the kind of character you want to play.

The Builder applies the game rules behind the scenes and turns those choices into a legal Yōkai! character.

It handles your Attributes and Skills, builds the mechanical profile, and lets you choose the Arcane Powers available to your yōkai.

Then the character gets personal.

The Builder can generate a Japanese name with kanji and meaning. It can also help create your Clan, background, appearance, goals, rumors, and other details that give your yōkai a life beyond the numbers on the sheet.

Don't like something it generates? Change it.

You can edit the result yourself or reroll individual pieces until the character feels right.

You can also add a custom portrait.

When you're finished, download the official Yōkai! character sheet as a PDF and you're ready to play.

You can go from "creepy fox spirit" to finished character without spending half an hour moving points between boxes.

Take Your Character to Discord

Finishing the character doesn't have to be the end of the process.

The Builder can generate a special Discord import code for your yōkai.

Use that code on the official Yōkai! Discord server to bring the character into the play platform built for the game.

Discord access is open to everyone.

The system reads your character data from the Builder, so you don't have to type your Attributes, Skills, or Powers again.

From there, you can join Yōkai! sessions, roll your d12s, use your character's abilities, and play with other members of the community.
